Non-GMO Food Demand Grows in Europe

Europe already requires labeling for GMO foods, specifically foods that contain more than 0.9% genetically engineered ingredients.  With that kind of regulatory framework already in place, you wouldn’t expect a need for anything resembling America’s Non-GMO Verified project, or any kind of non-GMO designation.

Yet demand for non-GMO labeled food is still growing in the EU.  What gives?

“The necessity comes … from the loopholes in the current EU labelling regime for GM food and feed. Animal products like meat, milk and eggs do not have to be labelled as GM, even if the animals have been fed on a GM diet,” said Alexander Hissting, managing director of the German Association of GM-free Food.

There’s also concern over a patchwork system developing after the EU parliament gave individual governments the chance to opt out of GM cultivation, either nationally or regionally.  That patchwork potential is likely fostering the growth of these non-GMO labeled foods.
